Prenatal care
Low-risk pregnant mothers who choose to hire a midwife will see their midwife throughout their pregnancy for routine prenatal visits, these appointments are typically about an hour long. In addition to checking on mother and baby, this time allows for bonding between her and her midwife. Visits occur once per month until 28 weeks, once every other week from 28 to 36 weeks, and once every week from 36 weeks until birth. These prenatal visits allow plenty of time to check in on/discuss several topics including:
your blood pressure and other vital signs
your baby’s heartbeat
your baby’s size
analysis of your urine
your baby’s position
your baby’s movement
your nutrition and excercise habits
your emotions
shared decision making on topics such as vitamin k, eye ointment, circumcision, vaccinations, etc.
many other topics involving you, your family, & your pregnancy/birth/baby
Labor & Birth
In addition to prenatals, your midwife will also attend your labor & birth, and provide post partum care through 6 weeks post-delivery. Care during your labor/birthing experience may include:
24/7 on call/access to your midwife from 37 weeks pregnant - 6 weeks post-delivery
monitoring of you and your baby’s vital signs (blood pressure, maternal heart rate, fetal heart rate, etc.)
monitoring of cervical dilation (if desired by mother)
ongoing evaluation of mother and baby’s overall well being
assistance in delivery of baby and placenta
immediate post partum/after birth care of mother and baby (suturing, newborn examination, breast feeding initiation support, etc.)
post partum care
Post partum visits routinely occur at 24 hours after birth, 48-72 hours after birth, 7-10 days after birth, and 6 weeks after birth, or any additional time deemed necessary by the client or midwife. Post partum visits generally include:
evaluation of mother and baby’s vital signs
